"FOSTER CHILD" WINS BEST FILM, BEST ACTRESS AWARDS AT 2008 DURBAN FILM FESTIVAL

12 August 2008 — Philippine Ambassador to South Africa Virgilio A. Reyes, Jr. reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the film "Foster Child" won the Best Film and Best Actress (for Cherry Pie Picache) awards at the 29th Durban International Film Festival held from 23 July to 3 August 2008 in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal province.

"Foster Child" directed by Brillante Mendoza, was praised by the Festival's International Jury for "delving with remarkable skill into the everyday lives of its extremely well-developed characters, and for fusing documentary and drama to create a brave, humane and unconventional film."

The film also gave Ms. Picache her second straight Best Actress award from the Durban Festival. She won the Best Actress award last year for her performance in "Kaleldo (Summer Heat)," which was also directed by Brillante Mendoza.

Ambassador Reyes attended the Festival screening of "Foster Child" in Durban on 27 July to accompany the director and to show the Philippines' support for the film.

The Durban International Film Festival is organized by the Centre for Creative Arts of the University of KwaZuiu-Natai, and is funded by the National Film & Video Foundation, South African Broadcasting Corporation, and the City of Durban, among others. END
