PHILIPPINES MAKES STRONG SHOWING AT 10TH OSIAN-CINEFAN FESTIVAL IN NEW DELHI |

15 August 2008 – The Philippine Embassy in New Delhi, India has reported on the successful participation of Filipino filmmakers at the 10th Osian Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema held in New Delhi from 10 to 20 July 2008.
Amidst a field of over 200 films from more than 40 countries that participated in the festival, the Philippines fielded a total of eight feature-length films and a short film in the festival lineup. Two prominent Filipino directors, Mr. Jeffrey Jeturian, best known for his film Kubrador, and Mr. Ed Lejano, also served as judges in the festival. The Filipino film entries, three of which were included in competitive categories, were as follows:
“Bayaning Third World” by Mike De Leon “Years when I was a child outside” by John Torres “Sister Stella L.” by Mike De Leon “Santa Mesa” by Ron Morales “Pasay” by Auraeus Solito “Literature” by Khavn Nicolas Dela Cruz “Tribu” by Jim Diamond Meer Libran “Kurap” by Ronaldo Marcelo Bertubin “Confessional” by Ruel Dahis Antipuesto and Jerrold Viacrucis Tarog
The movie “Confessional” went on to win the Best Feature Film Award in the festival with a corresponding prize of 200,000 rupees (approximately US$5,000) and guaranteed support of 800,000 rupees (approximately US$20,000) from Osian for its filmmakers’ next work.
The high point of Filipino participation at the festival came when veteran Filipino writer Jose “Pete” Lacaba became the recipient of the first-ever Aruna Vasudev Lifetime Achievement Award. Best known for his screenplays for Lino Brocka classics such as “Jaguar”, “Bayan Ko: Kapit sa Patalim” and “Orapronobis” and Mike De Leon’s “Sister Stella L.”, Mr. Lacaba was awarded in recognition of his stellar contribution to writing for cinema. - END |
