OZAMIZ CITY 21 September 2020 — In celebration of the 17th International Coastal Cleanup Day, the DFA Consular Office in Clarin, Misamis Occidental took part in the annual local cleanup drive hosted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-CENRO Ozamiz on 19 September 2020 at the Ozamiz City Coastal Bypass Road.
Volunteers from the Philippine National Police-Maritime Group, Philippine Coast Guard, and local civic groups also showed support to DENR-CENRO Ozamiz's invitation in this year’s ICC.
Amid the threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's cleanup drive had a limited number of participants who were required to observe standard health protocols by wearing face masks and cleaning gloves and physical distancing measures.
Sachet packets, sanitary pads, diapers, and plastic bottles were the common waste found and collected in the said coastal area. By clearing the area of garbage, the chances of such waste and debris reaching the sea and ocean is expected to lessen.
This year’s theme, "Safe Oceans Start at Home," encourages the public to answer the call for the preservation and protection of waterways by practicing solid waste management in their homes and local communities. END
