Secretary Locsin Delivers Virtual Keynote Address at Asia Society

PASAY CITY 27 October 2020– Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr. delivered the virtual keynote address at the Asia Society event to coincide with the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

In his remarks, Secretary Locsin discussed the Philippines’ actions against the COVID-19 pandemic; how the pandemic has impacted regional and global affairs; and how the Philippines will continue to work with other countries in addressing the effects of the pandemic. 

Quoting President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in the latter’s address before the UNGA: “President Duterte made it clear. How we address COVID-19 will define our future. For the Philippines, that means putting people at the core of our global response,” the Secretary said.

The Secretary also acknowledged the contribution of Filipino migrant workers to the Philippine economy amid several world crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic. The Secretary further highlighted how Filipino health care workers provide indispensable service recognized in many countries, especially at this time: “they are reputed for their expertise, efficiency, compassion, and genuine care for patients. We’ve asked host countries not to exclude them from their COVID-19 safety nets; and they have responded well.”

Secretary Locsin also answered questions on U.S.-China rivalry, the upcoming U.S. elections and the South China Sea issue, and how these impact the Philippines and the region. 

The event was moderated by Asia Society Executive Vice President Tom Nagorski. The Secretary also joined Asia Society in person in September 2019.
