PASAY CITY 09 December 2020 – Recognizing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cyberspace, the Philippines, as the current Country Coordinator for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, co-chaired with China the inaugural Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) - China Cyber Dialogue via video conference on 07 December 2020. The meeting also coincides with the ASEAN-China Year of Digital Economy Cooperation.

Information and Communications Technology Assistant Secretary Emmanuel Rey Caintic co-chaired the meeting with the Coordinator for Cyber Affairs of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr. Wang Lei, and highlighted that the Dialogue was a shared endeavor of ASEAN and China to strengthen cooperation and exchanges towards a safe and secure cyberspace. 

“Cyber cooperation, now more than ever, plays an important role in spearheading and bringing forth numerous opportunities for innovative areas of cooperation between ASEAN and China,” Assistant Secretary Caintic said, noting how the digital economy is now at the forefront of countries’ priorities.

Among the topics discussed were the general situation in cyberspace, policies and mechanism building, global governance and rules-making in cyberspace, pragmatic cooperation in the region, and Philippines’ efforts to enhance its cyber capabilities, including the establishment of cyber threat intelligence and analysis centers to build long-term resiliency of the National Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-PH), conducting and participating in cybersecurity training and certification programs, including drills and readiness programs to prepare for cyber-attacks.
