DFA to Shine Spotlight on Equal Access, Gender Parity in Space Sector

PASAY CITY 27 March 2021— Women hold half the sky, yet global data shows that out of three (3) science researchers, only one is a woman. To help break the glass ceiling and encourage women and girls to “reach for the stars”, the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Office of the United Nations and International Organizations (UNIO), in partnership with the Foreign Service Institute (FSI), the Philippine Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Vienna, Austria (Vienna PE/PM), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA), and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), will hold a webinar entitled, “Making Space for Women: Advancing Gender Equality in the Philippine Space Science Sector” on 29 March 2021, Monday, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, Philippine time, via the Zoom platform.

The webinar aims to present the current gender situation, contributing factors to gender inequality in these fields, and the existing policies and programs to enhance women’s participation in the space sector and in STEM, and to discuss future challenges and opportunities to advancing gender equality in the Philippine space science and technology sector, and other policy responses that can help close the gender gap in the field of science.

Participants will learn from the expertise and experiences of women space science practitioners from the Philippines’ space program, STAMINA4Space, the Philippine Space Agency, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States.
