PASAY CITY, 21 April 2021 – Secretary of Foreign Affairs Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr. lauded the strong humanitarian partnership between the Philippines and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) during his meeting with ICRC Head of Delegation in the Philippines Mr. Boris Michel on 21 April 2021.
Mr. Michel shared updates on ICRC’s work in conflict-affected areas in Mindanao as well as its programs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
To demonstrate the PH’s strong commitment to IHL principles, the Secretary mentioned that as Chair of the IHL Ad Hoc Committee for 2021, the DFA has been working closely with the ICRC and other government agencies to promote awareness of and respect for IHL in the country.
The Philippines is considered as one of the most progressive countries when it comes to IHL, having ratified all of the four Geneva Conventions and its three protocols, as well as conventions prohibiting the use of biological weapons, chemical weapons, and anti-personnel mine among others. In February 2021, the Philippines also ratified the Treaty on the Prohibition on Nuclear Weapons. END
