OUP 3G Ministerial Meeting1

26 September 2013; New York – Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Policy Evan P. Garcia represented the Philippines at the 6th Global Governance Group (3G) Ministerial Meeting held at the Permanent Mission of Singapore to the United Nations (UN) in New York.

Singaporean Foreign Minister K Shanmugam chaired the Meeting. Also in attendance was Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato Sri Anifah HJ Aman.

The 3G is an informal grouping of 29 UN Member States which promote a more effective, accountable and inclusive framework of global governance, with particular focus on economic issues.

At the meeting, the Ministers of the 3G held a dialogue with the present, future, and past Chairs of the G20, namely high-level representatives of the Russian Federation, Australia, and Mexico.

Undersecretary Garcia thanked Singapore for its leadership in the 3G process and for convening a timely dialogue with the G20 Troika following the St. Petersburg Summit.

Undersecretary Garcia stressed that the G20 should take into account the interests of developing countries in its work, and thereby contribute to addressing current global economic challenges by promoting long-term sustainable and equitable development.

3G Ministers noted that while the UN remains the central forum for global economic policy-making, engagement with influential groups such as the G20 was necessary for synergy and complementarity of efforts.  In view of the UN’s focus on a post-Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) framework, Ministers urged the G20 to work more closely with the UN.

3G Ministers agreed to further work on proposals to institutionalize dialogue and cooperation between the G20 and UN. END
