Philippine Embassy in Papua New Guinea Celebrates 50th ASEAN Anniversary in Port Moresby

10 August 2017 PORT MORESBY – The Philippine Embassy in Papua New Guinea, together with Malaysian High Commission and Indonesian Embassy, celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Port Moresby on August 08.
Philippine Ambassador Bienvenido V. Tejano, Malaysian High Commissioner Datuk Jilid Kuminding, and Indonesian Ambassador Ronald Manik led more than 50 participants during the flag ceremony and singing of ASEAN Anthem.
A group from the Papua New Guinea Department of Foreign Affairs led by Ambassador Alexis Maino, Deputy Secretary of Operations and Roving Ambassador to Micronesia and Marshall Islands, joined the celebrations. The respective officers of the Filipino and Malaysian communities in Papua New Guinea also attended.
In his welcome remarks, Ambassador Tejano paid tribute to the five founding fathers of ASEAN - Deputy Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak of Malaysia, former Foreign Ministers Adam Malik of Indonesia, Narciso Ramos of Philippines, S. Rajaratnam of Singapore, and Thanat Khoman of Thailand. He lauded ASEAN for being a “model of regionalism and cooperation” and expressed optimism for the future of ASEAN.
After the ceremony, the participants enjoyed a simple feast of Filipino, Malaysian, and Indonesian cuisine. END
