AGANA 11 January 2019 — The Guam Filipino Artists (GFA), in cooperation with the Philippine Consulate General, kicked off the Christmas season in Guam with the 7th edition of the Christmas Lantern Making Competition. Submission of entries and judging was held on 02 December 2018 at the Agana Shopping Center.

In his remarks, Vice Consul Alex O. Vallespin commended the GFA for organizing the event and congratulated all the winners and participants. “This annual event showcases Filipinos’ creative talent and superb workmanship,” he said.

The competition showcased how the traditional Christmas lantern, or parol, can be reinvented using non-traditional, recycled and repurposed materials.

As part of the mechanics of the contest, the 10 participants used such materials, including scrap paper, plastic, and indigenous materials. They were judged according to creativity and ingenuity in the use of materials, aesthetic appeal, workmanship, and harmony of colors.

Cash prizes amounting to US$500 for first prize, US$300 for second prize and US$200 for third prize were donated by Mr. Emelio Uy, a Filipino-American businessman and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Filipino Community of Guam. He is also a patron of the arts in Guam.

GFA donated the winning lanterns for display during the holiday season to the following institutions: the first place winner to Agana Shopping Center, one of the major sponsors of the event; the second placer to the Philippine Consulate General; and the third best lantern to the Guam Memorial Hospital.
