VANCOUVER 20 June 2018 – The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver, Canada kicked off a series of month-long festivities to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence with a flag-raising ceremony at Vancouver’s Filipino Plaza on 02 June 2018.
The ceremony, organized by the United Filipino Canadian Associations of British Columbia (UFCABC), was attended by leaders and members of various Filipino-Canadian community organizations, and Member of Parliament for Vancouver Kingsway Don Davies.
Consul General Neil Frank R. Ferrer, in his remarks during the brief program that followed the flag-raising, underscored this year’s Independence Day theme, “Kalayaan 2018: Pagbabagong Ipinaglaban, Alay sa Masaganang Kinabukasan” by exhorting the attendees to support the momentum towards positive and constructive change in the Philippines.
Consul General Ferrer also took the occasion to highlight the strong bonds of friendship between the Philippines and Canada, strengthened over the years by the two countries’ shared values and enduring people-to-people linkages.
MP Davies, who is also a member of the Canada-Philippines Inter-Parliamentary Group, reiterated his support of the Filipino community in Vancouver. For the past four years, June is celebrated as Philippines-Canada Friendship Month in Vancouver.
