VANCOUVER 25 June 2018 – A crowd of more than 100 Filipino-Canadians joined the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver at the special screening of the critically-acclaimed Filipino film and 2017 Metro manila Film Festival Best Picture “Ang Larawan,” to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence at The Cinematheque in Vancouver on 09 June 2018.
Consul General Neil Frank R. Ferrer, in his welcome remarks, exhorted every Filipino to support the momentum towards positive and constructive change as inspired by this year’s Independence Day theme, “Kalayaan 2018: Pagbabagong Ipinaglaban, Alay sa Masaganang Kinabukasan.”
Consul General Ferrer also took the occasion to highlight the strong bonds of friendship between the Philippines and Canada, enriched and strengthened over the years by the shared values and enduring people-to-people linkages.
Responding on behalf of the City of Vancouver was Acting Mayor Raymond Louie, who acknowledged the significant contributions of the Filipino-Canadian community to economic and socio-cultural progress of Canada, most particularly in Vancouver. Acting Mayor Louie also presented to Consul General Ferrer the declaration by Vancouver City Mayor Gregor Robertson proclaiming 12-19 June 2018 as Philippine Independence Festival Week in the City of Vancouver.
The showing of “Ang Larawan,” a film adaptation of a musical of the same title based on “A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino,” by Philippine National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin in 1952, was well received by the guests, who expressed their admiration for the performances of the artists.
The film showing was followed by an afternoon courtyard reception at the venue. END
