Consulate General in Hawaii Commemorates PH Independence with Flag-Raising, Breakfast with Filipino Community

HONOLULU 05 July 2018 — To commemorate the 120th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine independence, the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu held a flag-raising ceremony and hosted a breakfast reception for the Filipino Community in Hawaii on 12 June 2018, with the theme “Kalayaan 2018: Pagbabagong Ipinaglaban, Alay sa Masaganang Kinabukasan”.

Following the flag-raising ceremony, Consul General Joselito A. Jimeno, in his welcome remarks and Independence Day message, encouraged the Filipino American community to continue to build on the heroism and bravery of our heroes in protecting our independence. He also commended the Filipinos in Hawaii for maintaining a strong connection with their motherland.

Consul General Jimeno, Madame Araceli C. Jimeno, Hawaii Department of Transportation Director Jade Butay, and Knights of Rizal Commander Danny Villaruz led the offering of the lei at the bust of Dr. Jose Rizal. They were joined by Colonel Joseph Archog, the Philippine Liaison Officer to the United States Armed Forces Indo-Pacific Command.

The Independence Day messages of President Rodrigo R. Duterte and Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano were read by Consul Roberto T. Bernardo and Consul Joyleen E. Santos, respectively, during the program. 

Around 100 guests partook of the Filipino-style breakfast prepared for the occasion. During breakfast, the Independence Day video message of Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Manuel G. Romualdez was shown before the guests.

Consul General Jimeno also raffled off ten commemorative coins to mark the occasion, and the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu, which is being celebrated this year. END
