Filipino Community in Cape Town Celebrates Philippine Independence

PRETORIA 08 July 2019 – Philippine Ambassador to South Africa Joseph Gerard B. Angeles and his spouse Madame Cecilia Angeles showed support to the Filipino community in Cape Town as they celebrated the 121st Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence last 9 June 2019 in Cape Town.
Ambassador Angeles gave the opening address, where he lauded the Filipino community in Cape Town and praised their extraordinary unity and highlighted the progress made by the Philippines, especially in the economic front, and urged Filipinos to continue the struggle for real freedom by doing their share to combat poverty in the Philippines.
The community put up a show that highlighted the varied costumes and dances of the Philippines. Attendees were wowed by the medley of colors and designs of the various Philippine dresses such as the baro at saya, the Balintawak, Maria Clara attire, and the Igorot native dress.
Dancers gave an exhibition of grace by showcasing Filipino traditional dances such as the salakot dance, the Igorot tribal dance, and the tinikling; as well as modern hip-hop renditions.
The evening was most convivial, and the Filipinos and South African guests truly enjoyed the display of color, talent, and grace that is the hallmark of the Filipinos.END
