04 January 2017 BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – The Philippine Embassy in Brunei Darussalam commemorated the 121st anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal at the Embassy grounds on 30 December 2017.
Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Meynardo L.B. Montealegre led the wreath-laying ceremony.
With this year’s theme, “Rizal 2017: Mabuting Kaisipan, Susi sa Kaunlaran,” Ambassador Montealegre highlighted Dr. Rizal’s accomplishments as a nationalist and an “internationalist,” and encouraged everyone to be “modern day Rizals” drawing inspiration from the deeds of the national hero to further foster the Filipino’s love of country and fellowmen, and cooperation towards nation-building and development.
Following the Ambassador’s message, Post’s Assistance-to-Nationals Officer, Mr. Mark Arinquin, recited the Tagalog version of one of Dr. Rizal’s well-known poems, “A La Juventud Filipina” (Sa Kabataang Pilipino).
On December 29, a short documentary from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) titled, “Jose Rizal: Sa Landas ng Paglaya,” was played in loop at the Embassy’s Consular area to inform the public on the commemoration of the 121st anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. Rizal.
The ceremony was capped by a fellowship breakfast shared by Embassy personnel. END
