Punsalang commemorated the 121st Martyrdom Anniversary of Philippine National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal with a wreath-laying ceremony and singing of the national anthem at the Plaza Filipinas in Las Condes, Santiago on 30 December 2017.
In his speech, Chargé d’Affaires Punsalang invited the officials and staff of the Embassy to reflect on the heroism and values championed by the Philippine hero, and to use these ideals as guide in addressing and resolving modern-day problems presently faced by the Filipino.
The Jose Rizal bust in Plaza Filipinas was inaugurated in 18 May 1989. The Philippine Embassy and the Municipality of Las Condes also inaugurated a plaque detailing Rizal’s life and heroism in June 2016.
To this day, many members of the Chilean academe and youth continue to visit the Philippine Embassy to borrow books on Rizal’s life and read copies of the renowned Noli Me Tángere and El Filibusterismo. END
