23 March 2018 SYDNEY — Mayor Laarni “Lani” Lopez-Cayetano graced the International Women’s Forum in Sydney organized by Filipino community organizations in New South Wales, Australia, led by ADHIKA, Inc., Narra Co-Op Ltd. and Plaza Filipino, in coordination with the Philippine Consulate General in Sydney on March 18. The Forum coincides with the celebration of the International Women’s Month.
Mayor Lani was warmly welcomed by the audience at the Forum as she shared her life stories on being one of the youngest local chief executives in the Philippines and the first female Mayor of Taguig City. She also shared her advocacy on promoting women’s rights and welfare by establishing the Progressive Ladies’ League of the Philippines.
In particular, Mayor Lani called on the women to believe in their resilience and their innate inner strength to do good and to strive for the best wherever they are, including in public service.
The Forum, with the theme “We Make Change Work for Women,” featured different Filipino-Australian women who shared their real life experiences and their challenges as they settled in Australia. It also featured speakers who shared personal experiences on empowerment and leadership.
The Forum became an important venue to give voice to the Filipino women who faced challenges in balancing their responsibilities to their family and their careers, and at the same time, becoming productive members of the community as they helped strengthen community responses to the needs of the vulnerable sectors of society, such as children and the senior citizens.
Mayor Lani expressed appreciation for the opportunity to directly interact with the Filipinas in New South Wales who have especially made a positive difference in the community.
The Forum discussed the progress made globally in women's health, gender inequity and community support. The event was attended by almost 150 Filipino-Australian women leaders of the community. END
