PH Ambassador to Egypt Build on Economic & Technical Cooperation Initiatives in Djibouti

CAIRO 26 November 2020 – Philippine Ambassador to Egypt Sulpicio M. Confiado and Vice Consul and Economic Officer Bojer B. Capati concluded a series of meetings with key government officials and business leaders in Djibouti to initiate efforts to boost economic exchanges between the Philippines and Djibouti on 23 November 2020.

Ambassador Confiado first met with Mr. Abdoulkader Houmed, Director General of the L’Enseignement Technique et de la Formation professionelle, the Djiboutian government body managing and supervising technical education and skills development. Director General Houmed welcomed the possible partnership with the Philippines in terms of cooperation in hospitality, logistics, and transportation sectors. He said that the Djiboutian government can learn from the experience of the Philippines in developing technical and vocational schools.

Ambassador Confiado later visited the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority (DPFZA) where his delegation was welcomed by DPFZA Chairman Aboubaker Omar Hadi, Head of Marketing Department Mohamed Aref, and Djibouti Harbour Master Capt. Mohamed Moussa Abar. 

During the visit, Ambassador Confiado was briefed with the strategic and economic importance of the Port of Djibouti as an excellent business hub in the East African region and beyond, the commercial procedures guidelines in setting up businesses in the free zone, as well as the set of fiscal incentives for interested investors.

Chairman Hadi specifically mentioned that Philippine jeepney manufacturers and vehicle assembly operators are welcome to explore opportunities in the DPFZA and to establish a market in the whole African continent through Djibouti.

Finally, Ambassador Confiado also met with the Chamber of Commerce of Djibouti President Youssouf Moussa Dawaleh. During their meeting, Mr. Dawaleh mentioned that the Philippines and Djibouti can focus on maritime training, ports and logistics management, through the Centre de Ressources et des Competences (Resources and Competency Center), a PPP center that provides counselling and guidance for businesses, as well as technical and vocational training for young Djiboutians. END
