PHL Condoles with India, Nepal over Deadly Floods, Landslides
15 August 2017 — The Filipino people extended their sympathies to Nepal and India after devastating floods and landslides in both countries killed dozens and affected tens of thousands.
The Department of Foreign Affairs also said the Philippine Embassy in New Delhi and the Philippine Honorary Consulate in Kathmandu continue to monitor the situation.
"We would like to express our sympathy with the peoples and governments of India and Nepal as they mourn those who lost their lives in the landslides and flooding," Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano said in a statement.
At least 49 people were killed, 17 injured, and around three dozen people have been reported missing due to the landslides and flooding caused by heavy rains in southern Nepal since 11 August 2017.
The Nepal Red Cross estimated that around 100,000 people were affected by the disaster.
In the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, at least 45 people were reported to have been killed and more still missing after two packed buses were swept into a gorge by a landslide caused by heavy rains in the area.
The Department said no Filipinos were affected by the floods and the landslides. END
