Update on the Aftermath of Typhoon Mongkhut in Guangdong Province

18 September 2018 – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) continues to monitor the situation in Guangdong Province in China after Typhoon Mongkhut swept into the area on Monday.

In his report to the DFA Home Office, Consul General Marshall Louis M. Alferez said the Philippine Consulate General in Guangzhou issued an advisory to members of the Filipino Community to stay indoors, remain alert and follow the advice of authorities. It also closed the Consulate General for operations on Monday.

Based on their coordination with authorities and Filipino Community leaders in the area, there were no Filipino nationals reported hurt or seriously affected by the typhoon.

Consul General Alferez said the Guangdong Government issued a “three stops” notice which enabled authorities to make smooth preparations with around 2.5 million people relocated and over 48,000 fishing boats called to port. Work in more than 29,000 construction sites was suspended and 640 tourist sites were closed. All flights were grounded at the international airports in Guangzhou and Shenzen and some normal-speed rail services were suspended in Guangdong and Hainan province. END
