Statement: On Earthquake in Haiti
08 October 2018 – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has expressed its condolences to Haiti following a magnitude 5.9 earthquake that killed at least 12 persons and injured 188 others on Saturday evening.
In his report to Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano, Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel G. Romualdez said none of the estimated 500 Filipinos in Haiti were reported to be among the dead and injured in the earthquake and the magnitude 5.2 aftershock the next day.
Ambassador Romualdez said the epicenter was located about 19 kilometers northwest of Port-de-Paix, about 219 kilometers from the capital Port-au-Prince.
Ambassador Romualdez said Philippine Honorary Consul General Fitzgerald Brandt continues to monitor the situation and is ready to extend assistance to any Filipino who may have been affected by the earthquake. END
