Update on Hurricane Michael

10 October 2018 – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) today reiterated its advisory for members of the Filipino Community in five southeastern states in the United States to make the necessary preparations as Hurricane Michael was elevated to Category 4 and expected to make landfall in the Florida Panhandle midday on Wednesday.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano was informed by Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez that the estimated 232,000 members of the Filipino Community in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina have been told to keep themselves updated on the progress of the storm and to heed orders from local authorities. A state of emergency has been declared in Florida, Alabama, and Georgia.

Ambassador Romualdez reported that the National Hurricane Center has warned that the hurricane will bring life-threatening storm surge, hurricane-force winds, and heavy rainfall along the Northeastern Gulf Coast.

Ambassador Romualdez said the Embassy is closely monitoring the hurricane and had advised Filipinos who may find themselves in emergency situations that would require the Embassy's assistance to call (202) 368 2767. END
