Statement: On the Death of a Filipina in Sabah
08 December 2018 – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) expresses its condolences to the family of Madelyn Bernardo Asuncion, whose body was found floating in a river in Sabah more than a week ago.
The Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur reported to the Home Office that Madelyn’s body was found by a plantation worker floating in the Pengalan River in Melalap on 28 November 2018 and reported it to authorities.
Ambassador to Malaysia Charles C. Jose said authorities have informed the Embassy that there was enough evidence to classify the case as a possible homicide. The Embassy is waiting for the official report of the incident and the result of the autopsy from authorities.
Madelyn was originally from Zamboanga City but had been staying with her father in Malaysia for the past 10 years. Her father assisted authorities in identifying her remains. END
