Statement: On the UN Security Council’s Support for ASEAN in Facilitating Peaceful Solution in Myanmar

03 May 2021 – The Department of Foreign Affairs welcomes the UN Security Council’s “strong support for ASEAN’s positive and constructive role in facilitating a peaceful solution in support of the people of Myanmar” and echoes the Council’s call for the “release of all those arbitrarily detained, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint”. 

The Department also expresses its support for the work of Ms. Christine Schraner Burgener, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Myanmar. 

On 30 April 2021, the Council was briefed by Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof of Brunei Darussalam, as Chair of ASEAN, on the outcomes of the recent ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting on Myanmar. The Members of the Council welcomed the convening of the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting on 24 April 2021 in Indonesia, as well as the Chairman’s Statement and the “Five-Point Consensus.”

The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar also briefed the Council. The Members of the council underlined their full support for the work of the Special Envoy and welcomed her ongoing visit to the region. They encouraged complementarity of her work to the work of ASEAN, and hoped she would visit Myanmar as soon as possible.
