TORONTO 02 August 2018 — On the occasion of the International Yoga Day on June 21 and the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week during the third week of July, and in line with the Gender and Development Program of the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto participated in two seminar–workshops on 25 July 2018.
The seminar were entitled, “Understanding the Gender Approach in Disabilities” conducted by Jaisa Sulit, a licensed Occupational Therapist and Mindfulness Expert; and “Yoga and Disability Healing: A Meditative Approach,” discussed by Kaye Penaflor, a Yoga Instructor and Wellness Practitioner.
In her talk, Ms. Penaflor noted that yoga is more than just the pose and dispelled some of the misconceptions about yoga. She also discussed the eight-linked path to enlightenment, and how yoga can be utilized to heal one’s self.
Meanwhile, Ms. Sulit’s talk focused on the intersection of the issues of gender and disability. “Disability is more prevalent in women, making them marginalized,” she said.
Thus, programs that provide support for women with disabilities must take into consideration the specific needs of women for these programs to be relevant. Women with disabilities must be given opportunities to meet with other women with disabilities who are at the same time leaders, business owners and advocates, she further said. END
