TEHRAN 11 December 2018 – The Philippine Embassy in Tehran joins the 18-day campaign to end violence against women (VAW) by conducting a talk by a respected Iranian lawyer and a film showing on 30 November 2018.

One of the top five lawyers in Iran, Atty. Mahdi Arjomandi informed and raised awareness of various Iranian laws protecting women and children against violence, and gave practical tips on how to access social services for victims of VAW.

A total of 50 attendees actively participated during the open forum and were distributed with information materials on Iranian laws on violence against women.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador to Iran Wilfredo C. Santos expressed that Filipinos working and residing abroad are prone and vulnerable to various forms of abuses. He added that around 70 percent of all victims of human trafficking are women.

“One of the best ways to address violence against women is prevention. To be informed is to prevent gender-based violence,” said Ambassador Santos.

Shortly after the first part of the program, the VAW-relevant film “Insiang” by critically-acclaimed director Lino Brocka was screened.

According to the Embassy’s database, 99 percent of overseas Filipinos in Iran are women, mostly married to Iranian husbands. END
