BRUNEI 18 March 2019 — The Philippine Embassy in Brunei celebrated International Women’s Day on 08 March 2019 through an exhibit on the life of Clemencia Lopez, one of the Philippine heroes of the Project Saysay.

Clemencia Lopez was a feisty Filipina from Batangas who fought for her rights and that of her country, at a time when women did not yet have a voice.

Ms. Lopez was also the first Filipina to step into the White House and held an audience with then United States President Theodore Roosevelt. She pleaded to let her brothers come home from banishment on an island in the Philippines at a time when the U.S. forcibly instituted a policy of “benevolent assimilation” towards the people they regarded as savages or their “little brown brothers.”

The photo frame and write-up on the life and achievements of Lopez is displayed prominently at the Embassy’s consular area.

The Embassy also gave simple tokens together with brochures on the Magna Carta for Women to female clients of the Embassy. A special lane for female clients was also dedicated at the passport services section. END
