PH Consulate General Joins HK’s Celebration of Int’l Women’s Day

Hong Kong Womens Month 2

The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong, represented by Acting Head Germinia V. Aguilar-Usudan, celebrated International Women’s Day with the Hong Kong community in a cocktail reception held at the Hong Kong Central Government Office Conference Hall on 08 March 2019.

The reception was graced by some 600 men and women from the Consular Corps, Hong Kong government, business community and civil society, and doubled as a celebration of the 70th anniversary of founding of the People's Republic of China.

The event, organized by the Women’s Commission, was officiated by Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, the Territory’s first woman chief executive.

In her speech, Mrs. Lam said the Hong Kong government is committed to removing barriers for women to enter or remain in the workforce by implementing support measures such as the proposal to enhance maternity leave from 10 to 14 weeks, legislative amendments to prohibit direct and indirect discrimination on breastfeeding, and improving child care and elderly services.

The Hong Kong Women’s Commission was established in 2001 to advise the government and make recommendations on women’s issues.  Its current chairperson is Chan Yuen-han. (Hong Kong PCG photo)
