JEDDAH 13 December 2019 — The Philippine Consulate General in Jeddah recited the Anti-Violence Against Women (VAW) Pledge and signed an Anti-VAW Commitment Form to mark the start of an 18-Day Campaign to end violence against women during the flag-raising ceremony on 24 November 2019.

Philippine Consul to Jeddah and the Consulate’s Gender and Development (GAD) Focal Officer Mary Jennifer D. Dingal led the pledging ceremony highlighting the need for collective action to promote and protect the rights of women.

In his brief remarks, Philippine Consul General to Jeddah Edgar Barrairo Badajos urged the Consulate’s personnel—who wore orange t-shirts in solidarity with the advocates involved in the campaign and as a sign of hope and optimism—to  champion women’s rights and  practice being GAD advocates in their daily work as civil servants.

“What is important is to take action and to educate everyone that women have rights that need to be respected. Culture and religion should not be used to justify violence against women,” Consul General Badajos added while at the same underscoring the importance of going beyond words and taking action to end violence against women.

After the remarks of Consul General Badajos, all personnel were invited to take part in “The Orange Wall: An Orange Your Icon Project” and place their handprints and sign their names on the board to signify their support for the campaign. END
