THE HAGUE 02 January 2020 — The Philippine Embassy in The Hague commemorated the 123rd Anniversary of Dr. Rizal’s Martyrdom and celebrated Film Development Council of the Philippines’ Sandaan: The One Hundred Years of Philippine Cinema with the screening of the film "Ang Kababaihan ng Malolos" on 07 December 2019 at the Embassy.
The film was written by film historian Nicolas Tiongson, based on Dr. Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere, a novel on his famous letter addressed to the women of Malolos. It is an inspirational musical film featuring a cinematic glimpse into important historical events that the women played at the forefront of the reform movement of Malolos.
Philippine Ambassador to the Netherlands Jaime Victor B. Ledda, in his remarks, informed the guests that the film, which signifies the strength, character, and capabilities of women in the country’s historic struggle for independence was also in furtherance of the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Gender and Development (GAD) agenda. The film showing was also a fitting tribute to women as it coincided with the observance of the National Consciousness Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women and Children from 25 November to 12 December 2019.
The event was participated in by Dutch guests including Mr. Gerard Arp of the Arpenco Publishers, the publisher of “Raak me niet aan!,” the Dutch language version of Dr. Rizal’s novel and Sir Anton Lutter, The Hague Chapter Commander of The Knights of Rizal.
After the film showing, there was an interactive dialogue via Skype with Vicente Enriquez, the film’s producer, where the audience was informed that the essence of the movie is to increase awareness of the struggle of the women of Malolos for reform and independence and further the advocacy for equal rights and opportunities, including women’s, in building a free, equitable and prosperous society.
