PH Embassy in Yangon Organizes Anti-Sexual Harassment, Gender-based Violence Seminar

YANGON 22 January 2020 –– The Philippine Embassy in Yangon held its last Gender and Development (GAD) event for the year 2019 entitled “Anti-Sexual Harassment in the Workplace for Filipinos and Myanmar women in Yangon” on 15 December 2019.
The Embassy invited Socio-economic and Gender Resource Institute (SEGRI) Sanda Thant as its resource speaker sharing knowledge on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and anti-sexual harassment in the workplace. Ms. Thant is also the Co-Chair of Gender Equality Network (GEN) whose goal is to have gender equality in all sectors of the society of Myanmar.
During her lecture, Ms. Thant discussed the GBV and its core concepts. She cited examples of human rights abuses of women especially in the provinces of Myanmar. She also mentioned the different situations where women in Myanmar do not get equal rights with men. She explained that sexual violence can happen anywhere including the workplace, and discussed the negative effects of gender-based violence, how we can respond to these, and the legal remedies to be taken.
