DFA Consular Office in Tagum Commemorates the Signing into Law of R.A. 9710 or the Magna Carta of Women

TAGUM 20 August 2020 — In commemoration of the signing into law of Republic Act (R.A.) 9710 or the Magna Carta of Women, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Consular Office (CO) in Tagum organized a Gender Awareness and Development (GAD) Program, led by CO’s GAD Focal Point Officers Ms. Rosanna Fatima Umanan and Ms. Sache Cazzandra Cuyos, at the Consular Office Tagum, fourth floor of GMall, Tagum City, Davao del Norte on 14 August 2020.

Speaking to CO personnel and clients, the GAD program explained the salient points of R.A. 9710, the comprehensive women’s law, which seeks to eliminate discrimination against women by recognizing, respecting, protecting, fulfilling and promoting the rights of Filipino women, especially those in marginalized sectors. CO Tagum’s Officer-in-Charge Joany G. Margallo-Lucas highlighted the significant changes since R.A. 9710 was signed into law on August 14, 2009 and came into effect on September 15, 2009. She emphasized the human rights aspect recognized in the law, which promotes gender equality and thus protects both men and women’s rights. An Audio-Visual Presentation from the Philippine Commission on Women website was also shown during the program.

With the aim of providing awareness to CO Personnel and clients regarding the rights enshrined in the Magna Carta of Women, IEC materials were distributed followed by trivia games. END
