Bulletin: No Filipinos Hurt in Papua New Guinea Earthquake

08 May 2019 — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported that none of the approximately 36,000 Filipinos in Papua New Guinea (PNG) were hurt in the magnitude 7.2 earthquake which hit East PNG around 7:00 a.m. on 07 May.

Philippine Embassy in Port Moresby Chargé d’Affaires Mary Grace Villamayor said the Embassy is already in touch with the Filipino Community in the affected cities of Lae and Kokopo, and with the Filipino Association in PNG.

She reported that no tsunami warning was issued by the USGS-linked Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. The US Geological Survey identified the epicentre around 33 kilometers from the town of Bulolo. The earthquake was strong enough to be felt in Port Moresby, around 250 kilometers away. She added that the Embassy continuously monitors the situation and stands ready to provide the necessary assistance. END
