Abuja independence day

01 August 2013 - The Pakikipag-isa ng mga Pilipino sa Ghana (PILSAG), the organization of overseas Filipino workers (OFW) in Ghana marked the 115th Philippine Independence Day with a Fun Run and Sportsfest at the Children’s Park in Accra on June 16.

The event was attended by more than 100 OFWs working in various sectors. The celebration was graced by Ambassador Alex V. Lamadrid who has concurrent jurisdiction over Ghana.

In short remarks during the celebration, Ambassador Lamadrid conveyed to the Filipinos in Accra the greetings of President Benigno Aquino III, and highlighted the economic and political gains achieved by the Aquino Administration, particularly the significant reduction of poverty and the hefty increase in the Philippine GDP, which are directly attributable to President Aquino’s espousal of “Daang Matuwid” or good governance particularly through the fight against all forms of corruption.

Ambassador Lamadrid also highlighted the “investment” grade rating given to the Philippine economy by international credit rating agencies, as well as the stellar performance of the Philippine stock market. Ambassador Lamadrid also encouraged the Filipinos in Ghana and their foreign guests to invest in the Philippines for their future advantage when they retired from their jobs in Ghana.

The Independence Day Messages of President Benigno S. Aquino III and Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F. del Rosario were distributed to the guests.

Ms. Rose Tsebi, President of PILSAG welcomed the Philippine Embassy officials, Filipino community and other guests to the PILSAG Independence Day celebration.

The event featured the sportfest with games such as “bunong-braso”, relay, sack race and pot breaking, followed by awarding of winners and ending with a sumptous lunch of Filipino and African dishes.

The Embassy consular team of Mr. Raymund Ondiano and Ms. Felisa Ramos rendered consular services for the OFWs in Accra and Tema, Ghana. END
