13 December 2013- The Embassy of the Philippines in Buenos Aires extended its full support to the following fundraising activities held in Buenos Aires for the benefit of the victims of typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).

Upon the initiative of the Thai Embassy, a donation box was set up at the venue for the victims of typhoon Yolanda during the celebration of the annual ASEAN Family Day held at Estancia Whitmore in Canning, Ezeiza, Buenos Aires last November 16. It was attended by the five ASEAN Embassies in Buenos Aires, the members of their respective communities, as well as other guests. The donations amounted to approximately USD 690, which were deposited by the Malaysian Embassy, the chair of the celebration, to the account of UNICEF Argentina. Philippine Ambassador Rey A. Carandang thanked his ASEAN colleagues and the participants for their solidarity gesture.

Buenos Aires Haiyan doantion2Spearheading the project were Marta Ramirez, chef/owner of Captain Cook, and Christina Sunae, chef owner of CocinaSunae, who both conceived a fund raising event featuring Philippine culinary culture.  Both their restaurants specialize in Southeast Asian cuisine and are considered to be among the top exotic restaurants in the Argentine capital. Since 2009, the Philippine Embassy has been collaborating with these two leading chefs in promoting Philippine gastronomy in Buenos Aires. The event was held at Captain Cook, a fine dining restaurant in the upscale Buenos Aires suburban village of Martinez. 

Together with two other leading Argentine chefs, Martin Carrera and Franco Malacisa, and with the support of several sponsors, they prepared, in consultation with the Embassy, an all Philippine menu consisting of nine Philippine dishes at 400 Argentine pesos each (around 65 USD at current official rate). The restaurant was at almost full capacity at both dinners, which were attended by 109 diners consisting of Philippine Embassy contacts, foreign diplomats and the restaurant's regular clientele. The event raised the equivalent of USD 3000 which Captain Cook Restaurant donated directly to The Philippine Red Cross and UNICEF Argentina for the victims of typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).

Ambassador Carandang and Embassy officials were present at both dinners to briefly converse with the diners and to thank them for their solidarity. The restaurant was livened up with Christmas capiz "parols" lent by the Embassy and Philippine tourism materials were given as tokens to the diners as they left the venue. A message of gratitude entitled "La solidaridades la ternura de los pueblos" (Solidarity is the tenderness of peoples) printed on Philippine cards was also distributed by the Embassy among the diners.

The event was organized by the members of the Filipino community in collaboration with Fr. Crisanto Cipres, a Filipino parish priest from Leyte of the "Parroquia del Angel de la Guardia" in the district of  Villa Celina, in the suburbs of Buenos Aires. A  Holy Mass was celebrated followed by a buffet lunch of Filipino dishes. During the lunch, folk dance and a fashion show were presented by the members of the Filipino community. Philippine Embassy Third Secretary Ria Gorospe and other embassy officials were present at the event which raised 5,700 Argentine pesos (approximately USD 950) which were turned over to Fr. Cipres who is sending them to the Archbishop of Tacloban.

Solidarity Breakfast for the Philippines, November 27, 2013.

Buenos Aires Haiyan doantion5Australian Ambassador Patricia Holmes hosted a solidarity breakfast for the Philippines at the Australian Embassy residence in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, November 27. The event was supported by the ADEA, the Association of Spouses of Ambassadors accredited to Argentina. Ambassador Holmes delivered a short speech to convey her deepest sympathies to the people of the Philippines and gave assurances that Australia will be beside the Philippines in the rebuilding process. The proceeds of 23,400 Argentine pesos (approximately USD 3,836) were  donated by the Australian Embassy directly to UNICEF Philippines and The Philippine Red Cross for the Filipino typhoon victims. Philippine Embassy's Third Secretary Ria Gorospe led the embassy lady officials in thanking the Australian Ambassador and some 50 members of ADEA  who attended the event.

Upon the initiative of Fr. Juan José Cervantes, the Mexican priest of the Scalabrini order who is also the chaplain of the Filipino community, the latter joined the festivities held at theIglesia de NuestraSeñora de los Inmigrantes celebrating the patronal feast of Mary the Mother of Immigrants, which were attended by various immigrant groups in Argentina, primarily Bolivians, Paraguayan and Peruvians. The Filipino Community raised 870 Argentine pesos, approximately 150 USD, by selling Filipino delicacies at the food fair of the celebration. The proceeds were turned over to the Filipino priest from Leyte, Fr. CrisantoCipres, who is sending them to the Archbishop of Tacloban. Ambassador Carandang delivered short remarks of gratitude during the event's cultural program that included Philippine folk dances. END
