03 February 2014 - Representatives of the Singapore American School (SAS) Migrant Workers Outreach Program, headed by its President and CEO Oscar Adelman, handed over to Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Minda Calaguian-Cruz a cheque donation amounting to SGP $10,000 for the victims of typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) on January 30.
The handover ceremony was held at the Ambassador’s office at the Philippine Embassy in Singapore along Nassim Road. Also present were SAS Vanessa Hardinge, SAS Vice President for Recruitment Jeane Khang and Mrs. Caroline Adelman, Oscar’s mother. Oscar is the son of former American Ambassador to Singapore David Adelman.
Mr. Adelman said that they decided to come forward a few months after typhoon Yolanda to assure the victims that help is still coming and that they have not been forgotten.
Ambassador Calaguian-Cruz conveyed her appreciation to Mr. Adelman and his group for their noble gesture noting that it is very encouraging that the young people have inculcated the virtue of caring for others.
The Ambassador also thanked SAS for its assistance to migrant workers through the SAS Migrant Workers Outreach Program. She said that the program mirrors and complements the Embassy’s own efforts of helping empower Filipino overseas workers by providing them with opportunities to acquire new skills that they could use to further improve their lives.
The SAS Migrant Workers Outreach Program offers a free four-level course that teaches migrant workers basic computer programming. A number of Filipina household service workers (HSWs) have availed of the course. END
