20 June 2014 - The Philippine Consulate General in Chongqing hosted a dinner gathering for the Filipino community in Yunnan with the organization Pinoys sa Yunnan (PSY) on June 14 to commemorate the 116th Anniversary of Philippine Independence.
The program included the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, reading of the Independence Day messages of the President and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, a message from Vice Consul and Acting Head of Post Duke A. Villanueva of the Philippine Consulate General in Chongqing, a message from a PSY representative, and games.
In his message to the Filipino community, Vice Consul Villanueva reminded the Filipino Community of the importance of celebrating the anniversary of Philippine Independence in order to remember and honor the heroes whose sacrifices led to Philippine independence. Vice Consul Villanueva also praised the contributions of the Overseas Filipino Workers, calling them the “modern-day heroes” and the “face of the Philippines in the host country”. He also took the opportunity to call on all eligible Filipinos in Yunnan to register in the Consulate General’s overseas voters registration for the upcoming 2016 Presidential elections.
Prior to the dinner, the Consulate General staff led by Vice Consul Villanueva took the opportunity to conduct the overseas voters registration and consular outreach for Filipinos in Yunnan. END
