24 June 2014- To commemorate the 116th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence, the Philippine Embassy in Lisbon hosted a reception on June 19 for the diplomatic corps, government and local officials, members from the business sector and leaders of the Filipino community.

In his remarks, Philippine Ambassador to Portugal Philippe J. Lhuillier highlighted how the efforts of Filipino heroes who fought to secure the nation’s freedom more than century ago have shaped and defined the Filipino people today. The Ambassador also noted that despite the political and economic challenges experienced through the years, including dealing with the devastating forces of nature, the Filipino people have exhibited great fortitude and resilience to become one of the fastest growing economies in the Asian region today.

Ambassador Lhuillier stressed his goal of raising greater awareness and broadening engagement between the Philippines and Portugal so that both countries can mutually benefit from huge economic potentials arising from their respective links to the markets in the Southeast Asian region and the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries.

In fact, one of the Embassy’s thrusts in strengthening Philippine-Portuguese economic relations is the promotion of Philippine products in the Portuguese market. The Embassy has been closely working with local Portuguese businesspeople who are interested to bring in Philippine products into Portugal and export Portuguese products, such as wine and olive oil, to the Philippines.

The reception showcased Philippine cuisine which was prepared using products such as the Mama Sita’s brand of food mixes and sauces, and high-quality products highlighting the excellence of Filipino creative design in furniture, handicrafts and fashion accessories. END
