27 June 2014 - The Philippine Embassy in Dili formally kicked off its commemorative activities for the 116th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence with a simple but solemn flag-raising ceremony last June 7.
The commemorative event was held at the Embassy grounds and was attended by nearly 200 Filipinos currently based in Timor-Leste.
In line with the theme of this year’s independence celebration, Pagsunod sa Yapak ng mga Dakilang Pilipino: Tungo sa Malawakan at Permanenteng Pagbabago, Philippine Ambassador to Timor-Leste Maria Aileen H. Bugarin, in her brief remarks, urged the members of the Filipino community to be inspired by the country’s heroic past, and use their willpower, wisdom and creative energies to contribute to the ongoing efforts of fostering national development and improving the Philippines’ image and standing in the international community.
Drawing particular references from the Independence Day messages of President Benigno S. Aquino III, Vice President Jejomar C. Binay and Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F. del Rosario, Ambassador Bugarin remarked, “Our nation is now at a critical juncture of history. We are now hearing positive and encouraging developments back home. Our country, however, is relying on us, the Filipino people, to sustain such great momentum so that our Inang Bayan – our beloved Motherland – could finally achieve national redemption and sustainable progress.”
Filipinos were treated to a sumptuous Filipino breakfast immediately after the flag-raising ceremony.
Some parts of Sigalot, a documentary produced by award-winning broadcast journalist Cheche Lazaro, were also shown at the sidelines of the event so that Filipinos in Timor-Leste could have a better understanding and appreciation of the Philippines’ consistent advocacy for the rule of the law in the settlement of territorial and maritime disputes.
The Embassy also reminded the Filipinos in attendance of the ongoing registration for the 2016 national elections.
The event provided an excellent opportunity for the members of the Filipino community in Timor-Leste to foster greater camaraderie, as well as renew their collective commitment to make the vision of a stable, peaceful and prosperous Philippines a reality. END
