24 June 2015 - The Office of the Philippine Honorary Consul in Maldives organized a joint program with the Filipino community in celebration of the 117th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence held on June 12.

Philippine Honorary Consul Abdulla Salih acknowledged the presence of invited chief guest, Deputy Minister for Environment and Energy Ali Amir during his opening remarks at the event.

The occasion was commemorated by guests not in the usual Baro’t Saya and Barong Tagalog attire but in comfy t-shirts, shorts and flip-flops as everyone in attendance participated in the friendly Pinoy games of karerang sako, luksong tinik, luksong baka and kadang-kadang held at an open stadium in the West side of Malé. A cleanup drive was also held at the island’s main thoroughfares as members of the Filipino community swept and picked up plastic trash on streets and gutters bordering the seashore. Habeeru, a local online media, commented that it was the “first time that expatriates in the Maldives have taken such an initiative.”

Everyone shared and enjoyed a salo-salo lunch served in “boodle fight” style. END
