15 July 2015 – The Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai presented a concert of the Philippine Madrigal Singers at the Shanghai Centre Theatre on June 02 in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Philippines-China Diplomatic Relations and the 117th Anniversary of Philippine Independence.
The Madz, as they are fondly called, amazed the audience with their rendition of traditional Philippine songs, such as “Chua-ay, Usahay, Tuksuhan, Da Coconut Nut”; a Chinese song, “The Moon Represents My Heart,” as arranged by their Choirmaster Mr. Mark Anthony A. Carpio; and contemporary songs “Marry Me” and “Happy”. In response to the audience’s clamor for an encore, the Madz impressed with their interpretation of the “Circle of Life” from the Lion King.
With a capacity of 942 seats, Shanghai Centre Theatre was almost fully occupied with Chinese, expatriates, and Filipinos who were excited to watch the performance despite the heavy downpour that lasted through the night. Philippine Consul General to Shanghai Wilfredo R. Cuyugan remarked, at the opening of the program, that the voices and music of the Madrigal Singers are the gifts of hope and token of the enduring relationship between the peoples of the Philippines and China.
Prior to the concert, Consul General Cuyugan hosted a reception for the consular corps, Filipino and Chinese businessmen, and officials from the local government offices at the Camus Lounge. Tanduay Rhum, in its pure and mixed forms, was introduced to the guests.
The Madz were very well received and the audience openly expressed hope for another enchanting performance in Shanghai. END
