PHL Embassy in Pretoria Discusses Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003
Pretoria PE’s GAD focal person Vice Consul Marie Cris P. Chieng conducts the information session on RA 9208 – Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003.
05 July 2017 PRETORIA — In its continuous efforts to promote gender and development (GAD), the Philippine Embassy in Pretoria discussed R.A. 9208, also known as the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003 to over 350 members of the Filipino community from all over South Africa.
The Embassy’s Gender and Development (GAD) focal person Vice Consul Marie Cris Chieng discussed the salient points of RA 9208, highlighting in particular the elements in an act which constitute as trafficking of persons and who are liable for punishment. Vice Consul Chieng also noted the vulnerability and likelihood of women and children as victims of trafficking, especially in the sex trade.
Vice Consul Chieng encouraged the community to be familiar of situations that may involve trafficking and to reach out to the Embassy should they find themselves or someone to be in this situation. She emphasized the Embassy’s readiness to extend help to all Filipinos in distress and noted that all Embassy personnel are trained to provide assistance in a gender-sensitive manner.
