YANGON 06 January 2024 – The Philippine Embassy in Yangon joined the Filipino nation in the commemoration of the 128th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal on 30 December 2024.

This year's commemoration puts forth the theme “Rizal sa Bagong Pilipinas: Buhay at Aral, Aming Nilalandas” (Rizal in the New Philippines: Life and Teachings, as Our Guide) highlighting how Rizal’s life, legacy, and teachings continue to illuminate the path towards a brighter future for the Filipino people under the banner of “Bagong Pilipinas.”

The Embassy held a wreath-laying ceremony at Sentro Rizal Yangon in honor of Dr. Rizal’s life of servant leadership. The program was led by CDA Nayan, Vice Consul Peter John de la Fuente, and Colonel Jose P. Navarro, Jr.

A documentary entitled “Jose Rizal: Sa Landas ng Paglaya” (Jose Rizal: On the Path to Freedom), commissioned by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) was shown to foster deeper understanding of Dr. Rizal’s aspirations for the Filipino nation. Historians discussed Rizal’s pivotal role in cultivating a practical resolution in the Philippines’ struggle against colonialism through a quest for excellence and upliftment of the lives of the less fortunate.

In his keynote message, Chargé d'Affaires Angelito Nayan drew from the Panata sa Bagong Pilipinas’ solemn pledge to pursue the Filipino nation’s goals through love, concern, and compassion (“...ng may pagmamahal, pakialam, at malasakit”) in emphasizing how Rizal’s patriotism, commitment to excellence, and empathy for others serve as a timeless call to action for all Filipinos in advancing the nation’s aspirations.
