SHANGHAI 04 July 2025 — The Philippine Consulate General hosted a festive and meaningful celebration of the 127th anniversary of Philippine independence and the 50th anniversary of Philippines-China diplomatic relations on 26 June 2025 at the Portman-Ritz Carlton Hotel in Jing’an District, Shanghai.
Newly-arrived Philippine Consul General to Shanghai Myca Magnolia M. Fischer led the Philippine Country Team—the Consulate General plus the Philippine Trade and Investment Center and Department of Tourism Office—in welcoming guests that counted among their ranks key Shanghai Municipal and Party officials, representatives of the city’s 77-country strong consular corps, business and tourism partners, and representatives of Filipino organizations.
Honoring the occasion on behalf of the Municipal government were Shanghai Foreign Affairs Office Director General Ms. Ma Yinghui, Shanghai Municipal People’s Congress Deputy Inspector Mr. Luo Jie, and Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Chinese People and Political Consultative Conference Deputy Director Mr. Cai Zhengfeng.
Addressing the gathering, Consul General Fischer cited the Philippines’ many economic and developmental gains and the opportunities available for trade and investment. She added, “this year, we mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and China. But our peoples have been trading and mingling with each other for thousands of years. President Bongbong Marcos has emphasized that China is an important neighbor with whom the Philippines shares a long history of friendship and kinship. China is already the Philippines’ number one trading partner, 5th largest source of official development assistance, 17th largest source of approved foreign investments, and the 6th largest source of foreign tourists. But the economic footprint of our relations does not match the strong people to people ties that underpin it. There is definitely room to grow in our economic relationship, and there is profit to be made. We look forward to forging numerous mutually beneficial endeavors.”
The reception was also a celebration of Philippine culture with members of the Pinoy Teachers Association in Shanghai performing an elegant and inspired rendition of the Spanish-influenced dance Paypay de Manila (“Folding fans of Manila”). Post also featured Philippine dishes in the spread, such as adobo, crispy pata, kinilaw na tuna, chicken inasal and salpicao. Post introduced cocktails made with Paradise Mango Rum Liqueur and Destileria Limtuaco’s Calamansi and Dalandan Liqueur. San Miguel Beer and fresh pineapples from S&W were a big hit.
A highlight of the reception was the recognition of five Filipinos in the Yangtze River Delta region, who were among the Filipinos featured in the #MadeItInChina social media campaign of the Philippine foreign service posts in China, led by the Philippine Embassy in Beijing.
The five were musician Moises Sumile Jr., mathematics educator and author Lorelei L. Saren, welding specialist and instructor Joue D. Panganiban and couple—Dr. Michael Ong of Suntec Hospital and Shanghai Ruidong Hospital, and his spouse Founder and CEO of Bebebalm Inc., and Presidential Awards for Filipino Individuals and Organizations Overseas (PAFIOO) Pamana ng Pilipino Awardee Caroline Ong.
