DFA MOAO Joins Coastal Cleanup in Manila Bay
MANILA 02 October 2024 – The Department of Foreign Affairs - Maritime and Ocean Affairs Office (DFA-MOAO) proudly joined coastal cleanup activity recently, organized by the Department of Natural Resources (DENR) to commemorate this year’s International Coastal Clean-Up Day.
Held annually on the third Saturday of September, International Coastal Clean-Up Day (ICC) is considered the world’s largest volunteer effort dedicated to ocean health. The event mobilizes volunteers to remove trash from beaches, rivers, lakes, and waterways. The ICC 2024 activities in the Philippines were held in 250 coastal sites, with ten in the National Capital Region. DFA-MOAO joined the clean-up in Manila Bay led by SM.
Marine debris continues to pose significant threats to wildlife, disrupts ecosystems, and impacts the livelihoods of coastal communities. The ICC activity encourages collective action to combat the issue, highlighting the importance of sustainable practices and environmental stewardship.
September also remains a vital month for maritime awareness and underscoring the importance of our oceans and coastal ecosystems. Presidential Proclamation No. 316, Series of 2017, declared the month of September of each year as the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANAMo).
“International Coastal Clean-Up Day” is one of the three national and international commemorative events related to the marine environment that is promoted through Proclamation 316. The other two events are “National Maritime Day” and “Fish Conservation Week.” The MANAMo celebrations serve as an important reminder of the critical role our waters play in sustaining biodiversity, supporting livelihoods, and addressing climate change.
DFA-MOAO joins fellow environmental stewards dedicated to preserving the beauty of our coastal areas and marine ecosystems. END
