MANILA 06 March 2025 — The Department of Foreign Affairs’ Office of Cultural Diplomacy (OCD) met with the officers of the Animation Council of the Philippines (ACPI) to look at the final developments in its first mini animated series, Barriolympics: Laro▶️Play, at the PlayLab Animation Studio in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig on 14 February 2025.
Barriolympics: Laro▶️Play features iconic Filipino games such as Tiyakad, Sungka, Sipa, Luksong-Tinik and Patintero in a visually captivating and educational video format meant to acquaint the younger generations with Philippine traditional games and inspire them to return to their physical playgrounds. Through this animated project, OCD hopes not only to connect the next generation of overseas Filipinos with their heritage but also showcase the world-class competence of our animators and promote the Philippine animation industry.
The video series is a collaborative effort between OCD and ACPI and marks the first time in Philippine animation history that its five biggest local animation studios, namely, Top Draw Animation, Inc., Toei Animation Philippines, Inc., Toon City Animation, Inc., Top Peg Animation, Creative Studio Inc. and PlayLab Animation Studio, Inc., worked together on a single project.
The teaser to the Barriolympics: Laro▶️Play premiered at the Shangri-La Red Carpet Cinema in Mandaluyong City on 30 November 2024, on the occasion of the annual ACPI Philippine animation festival, Animahenasyon 2024. The complete video series was launched online in February of this year, in celebration of Philippine Arts Month, and can be accessed through the DFA YouTube channel via this link. END
