22 September 2016 — Members of the British Group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (BGIPU) called on Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for International Economic Relations Manuel A.J. Teehankee on September 20 as part of their visit to the Philippines.

Hosted by the Senate of the Philippines, the visit coincides with the celebration of 70th year of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and the United Kingdom (U.K.) and aims to increase engagement between officials of both countries, promote cross-cultural understanding, and enhance people-to-people links.

The BGIPU delegation is composed of Sir David Amess MP (Southend West), Mr. Mark Pritchard MP (The Wrekin), Mr. Virendra Sharma MP (Ealing, Southall), Mr. Ian Paisley MP (North Antrim), The Baroness Hooper CMG and the Lord Rogan.

During the call, Undersecretary Teehankee and the BGIPU discussed a wide range of topics affecting PH-UK relations including the U.K.’s support for the Mindanao peace process, bilateral trade and investment, status of Filipino workers in the U.K., the U.K. referendum to leave the European Union known as “Brexit,” and support for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
