04 November 2013 - In support of Philippine efforts for post-earthquake recovery in the Visayas, the United Nations (UN) launched its Action Plan for Bohol last week. Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F. del Rosario joined UN Resident Coordinator Luiza Carvalho and Australian Ambassador Bill Tweddell in co-chairing the launch ceremony held at RCBC Plaza in Makati City on October 25 which was participated in by the UN and Humanitarian Country Teams, the diplomatic corps, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the media.
The overall UN Bohol Action Plan seeks US$48 million for the needs of the victims in Bohol. The plan will support priority needs including emergency shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene, debris removal and coordination, and other humanitarian priorities.
Secretary Del Rosario expressed the appreciation of the Philippine Government and Filipino people for the partnership with the UN and the international community for recovery efforts in the Visayas. He cited the effective collaboration between the Philippine government and the UN country team as well as with international partners through the cluster model mechanism, which "help reached those in need immediately and comprehensively, and in the recovery reconstruction that followed."
During the launch ceremony, Ms. Carvalho announced that the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, Undersecretary-General Valerie Amos has allocated up to US$ 5 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF). Embassies, Missions and NGOs present and which also announced contributions and assistance included Australia, the European Union, Germany, Holy See, Indonesia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Sweden, the United States, Philippine Red Cross, Plan International and Save the Children.
