Landmark Lighting to Cap Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN

03 August 2017 MANILA – To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN, a Landmark Lighting activity will take place in the evening of August 08 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Complex in Pasay City.

A colorful 20-foot ASEAN lantern will be lit at exactly 7:00 PM at the CCP Complex, simultaneous with lighting activities in more than 70 cities and municipalities all over the Philippines. The beautifully-designed ASEAN Lantern was made in Pampanga, Philippines, known for its lantern industry, and will feature the flags of ten (10) ASEAN Member States, the emblem of ASEAN, vinta sails, sampaguitas, anahaw leaves, and singkaban, among others.

Prior to the lighting activity, there will be a simultaneous blowing of horns by sea vessels across 159 Philippine ports at 3:00 P.M to signal the celebration of ASEAN’s Golden Anniversary.

This will be followed by an ASEAN Grand Parade where students in ASEAN-inpired costumes will march from the Luneta to the CCP Grounds. The parade will be made more festive with the participation of marching bands, street dancers, kiteflyers, ASEAN-inspired floats, and higantes.

The program for the Landmark Lighting ceremony, led by Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alan Peter S. Cayetano, will then take place, which will feature, among others, beat poetry reading and cultural performances from ASEAN artists. The ceremony will end with a fireworks display.

This will be followed by an ASEAN Music Festival at the BGC High Street in Taguig City where renowned Filipino artists, such as Itchyworms, Up Dharma Down, 6 Cyclemind, the Juans, and Cast of Rak of Aegis will perform.

Other ASEAN Member States will hold their respective Landmark Lighting activities at a specified time on 8 August.

The Landmark Lighting symbolizes ASEAN’s important role as the light that guides the path of the ten (10) ASEAN Member States in pursuit of regional peace and security, prosperity, and socio-cultural development. END
