DFA Promotes Kidney Health

HRMO Kidney Health

06 September 2017 MANILA — The Human Resources Management Office (HRMO) of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), in partnership with The Medical City, conducted a seminar on promoting kidney health at the Bulwagang Elpidio Quirino. The seminar aimed to raise awareness on proper caring for kidneys and other kidney-related diseases and treatments.

The seminar’s resource speaker, Dr. Roberto Tanchanco, the Head of Nephrology Unit of The Medical City, spoke on the importance of the kidney to the proper functioning of the body and underlined the warning signs that they are damaged. He also noted that a person has a higher risk of acquiring kidney disease if he/she has diabetes, hypertension, a family history of kidney disease, kidney stones, and recurring UTI. Different treatments and testing for kidney disease were also discussed.

Dr. Tanchanco mentioned to the participants that 10% of the population has kidney disease, affecting 1 in 5 men and 1 in 4 women. He also underscored that to prevent kidney and kidney-related diseases, one needs to regularly visit a doctor, take prescribed medicines, maintain healthy diet, avoid salty foods, drink lots of water, regularly exercise, and quit cigarette smoking.

At the end of the seminar, participants availed themselves of the dipstick with consult procedure provided by the Medical City. END
